Off the Grid – New Paltz Homeowner overcomes hurdles to building zero-net energy home
The first thing one notices after entering David Shepler’s three-story, zero-net energy house in New Paltz is its eerie quietness. From an energy conservation perspective, this is a very good thing.
“Kiss My Face” goes green and saves big
The Ulster County-based natural personal care products company Kiss My Face has taken its eco-friendly commitment to a new level, with what it claims is the largest solar-powered electrical system in the county. And they found a unique way to do it: by lease.
Eco-friendly living, energy efficiency promoted at county fairgrounds (Poughkeepsie Journal)
Olivebridge resident Vickie O’Dougherty already has a geothermal heating system installed in her home along with solar panels and any other products that are available to increase energy efficiency. “Central Hudson paid me $37 last year,” O’Dougherty said as she strolled around the Dutchess County Fairgrounds Sunday during the second annual Hudson Valley Green Fair. “I like the idea of them giving me a check than the other way around.”
Hudson Valley Clean Energy Makes History (Hudson Valley Mercantile)
Hudson Valley Clean Energy’s 4,100-square foot warehouse in upstate New York uses solar energy, geothermal heating and cooling and other technology, to produce as much energy as it consumes, making it the first “zero net energy,” carbon free commercial building in New York State. Its total annual energy bill for 2008 was a mere $266, essentially for just being connected to the grid.
RHINEBECK OFFICE MAKES MORE ENERGY THAN IT TAKES (Poughkeepsie Journal)
RHINEBECK — Northeast winters can challenge even the greenest of buildings. Solar panels struggle on dreary days. Insulation is tested by subzero temperatures. So the owners of Hudson Valley Clean Energy are laying claim to a conservation coup. Their unremarkable- looking headquarters in Rhinebeck is “zero net energy,” meaning it makes more energy than it takes over a year.
State applauds ‘zero-net’ energy building
RHINEBECK — A commercial building here reports an annual energy bill of just $266. It’s a 4,100-square-foot office and warehouse owned by Hudson Valley Clean Energy, a contracting firm that installs systems such as solar panels and geothermal heating and cooling rigs. The building, on Hook Road north of Rhinebeck, uses those technologies to save energy and to burn no fuels on-site.

Harnessing the Sun (Poughkeepsie Journal)
For local solar power supporters, sunshine is unlimited free energy falling out of the sky — which they seek to collect and use as efficiently as possible. To some, motivation comes from environmental consciousness. Thanks to local, state and federal incentives, in the form of rebates and tax credits, the financially savvy are also joining environmentalists in choosing solar.
